Answer

Well...that all depends on exactly what you want to hide. The short answer is: using CSS! :)

The longer answer (with said CSS) is below, broken out into the different areas you can hide:

Hiding the Whole Left-Hand Breadcrumb Path

  1. Go to Admin Stuff > Look & Feel and scroll down to the Custom JS/CSS Code box.
  2. Add this CSS:
    <style>
    #breadcrumbsl { display: none; }
    </style>

    (That's an el up there at the end...not an I or a one. ;)
  3. Click Save Custom HEAD.

Hiding an Element in the Left-Hand Breadcrumb Path

If you'd like to just hide 1 or 2 elements in the breadcrumbs, you can do that, too!
Check out the image below to see the element's ID.

Breadcrumbs' IDs

  1. Go to Admin Stuff > Look & Feel and scroll down to the Custom JS/CSS Code box.
  2. Use the CSS below as a starting place...add whichever of the elements you want to hide:
    <style>
    #bc_library_home { display: none; }
    </style>
  3. Click Save Custom HEAD.

Hiding the Login

Warning: If you hide the Login link, you need to bookmark your login page...otherwise you won't be able to log in and create/edit guides! :)

  1. Go to Admin Stuff > Look & Feel and scroll down to the Custom JS/CSS Code box.
  2. Add this CSS:
    <style>
    #breadcrumbsr { display: none; }
    </style>
  3. Click Save Custom HEAD.

Hiding the Whole Top Navigation Area - Breadcrumbs on Both Sides

  1. Go to Admin Stuff > Look & Feel and scroll down to the Custom JS/CSS Code box.
  2. Add this CSS:
    <style>
    .topnav { display: none; }
    </style>
  3. Click Save Custom HEAD.

  1. How can I make the color of the space behind the breadcrumbs match the the color of my tab?
    by Erin on Aug 13, 2013.
  2. Hi, Erin!

    You'd need to add this to your guide or site's custom CSS to put a background color in the breadcrumbs bar:

    .topnav {background: #HEX CODE;}

    Where HEX CODE is the 6-digit color code you used for your tabs. :)

  3. Hi there,

    Is it possible to change the URL for Library link on breadcrumb (first element)? Ours is currently pointing to the corporate website (sidra.org) though it should point to our Library website.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Many thanks,
    Hassan.

  4. Yes it is possible to change the first breadcrumb URL!

    Login to your LibGuides system > Admin Stuff > System Settings > General Tab. In the first section, right column, change the url in the 'Institution URL' field. Voila! You're all set!

  5. Hello,

    How do I remove breadcrumbs for a group (and its corresponding pages) for v2?

    Thanks!

    by Kristina Green on Jun 19, 2014.
  6. Hi Kristina,
    If you already have a group in mind in your beta site, it'll be easier if I can go to the group pages to see it in order to give you the precise CSS for it. I'll email you directly for more information.

  7. Hello,

    Is it possible to change the URLs of second/third/etc breadcrumbs?

    I see post 4.'s explanation of how to change the URL of the Library (1st) breadcrumb. But is there a way to edit the CSS to change the URLs of other breadcrumbs?

    Thank you,

    Graham
    by Graham Sherriff on Jan 15, 2015.
  8. Hi Graham,

    It isn't possible to change the URL for the other breadcrumbs. They are tied to your system and the guide you are on.

  13. Hello,

    Is it possible to change the color of the breadcrumbs themselves to match our current theme?

    Thanks!
    by Jasmaine on Mar 30, 2015.
  14. Hi Jasmaine,

    For LGv1, you can add this code to your system's custom CSS:

    .topnav a { color: #HEXCODE; }

    Replacing HEXCODE with your colors.

  15. Rather than remove the log-in, is it possible to change the link color to white (the page's background color)? We would still know it's there and be able to click on it, but it would be invisible to others...
    by Diane on Apr 19, 2015.
  16. Hi, Diane!

    I don't recommend doing this, because it makes your site more difficult to use, and it doesn't hide the link from screen readers, or from all browsers.
    If you'd like to keep your staff able to log in, I recommend bookmarking the login page instead.
