Q

How can I force html code to display?

How do I force html code to show up in a box - ascii (such as <) is being converted to characters (such as <). I want to know how to display the code (not the link): Chat with a librarian. I've tried pasting plain text, creating a text box, ascii characters. Thanks-

Here is a tool that Springy Support uses.  It should help:

http://www.htmlescape.net/htmlescape_tool.html

To use this tool:

  • Copy the plain html text you're working with (with all the carrots, etc. as they normally are)
    For example: <table> </table>
  • Paste it into the top box of HTMLEscape, & click Escape
  • Your escaped html will appear at the bottom; copy that text
    For example: &lt;table&gt; &lt;/table&gt;
    &lt; = <
    &gt; = >
  • Plain Text Editor tab circled.Take that code and paste it into the Plain Text Editor of a Rich Text box. Pasting in the plain text editor will ensure that your markup will appear correctly to your users.

  1. Thanks for the helpful response. This approach worked until I edited and saved the box again, at which point the plain text code was converted back into a link. I've seen code on other libguides pages, so I know it can be done.

  2. Hi Lynn - the tech team was able to fix this. They weren't aware the code was reverting when you went back in to edit. If you go to edit it now, it won't change the < and > characters back into < and > upon saving or re-editing. (I've tested on my own code...works beautifully!) Sorry for the issue - thanks for your patience while we figured that one out! :)
