Want to embed a PDF within a box?

Note: This method won't work on all browsers/platforms - the basic gist is that the behavior of non-html documents (like .pdf, .doc, etc.) is a property that's defined by an individual for their workstation. This is both for security and compatibility - e.g. if I don't have Word or Adobe installed on my machine, trying to display a .docx in my browser means I'm going to see a blank page.

  1. Upload a file to a Documents and Files box
  2. Copythe resulting URL by right-clicking on the link. Depending on which browser you're using, you'll see something different. Look for:
    • Copy shortcut if you use Internet Explorer
    • Copy link location if you use Firefox
    • Copy link address if you use Chrome
  3. In the same Documents and Files box, select "add text"at the top of the page.
    • IMPORTANT: Best practice is to upload a link to the document and the embedded version in the same Documents and Files box.
  4. Click the Plain Text Editortab at the top of the box & paste in the following code, adding in the URL and changing the 600 in the height & width to whatever size you want.
    <iframe src="PASTE IN YOUR URL" scrolling="yes" width="600" height="600">
    <p>Your browser does not support iframes</p>

  2. Hi Chandrika - I added width="950" and height="500" to your iframe tag and now it's showing a bit larger. Feel free to edit the code to change those numbers to whatever you'd like! :)

  6. Hi Karrie -
    Your code seems to be working OK for me - just remember, because the iframe code is HTML, it's important to click the Plain Text Editor tab (at the top of the Rich Text box) before pasting in the code.

  7. Mine works fine, but how do I remove the bottom link to the same pdf file? Look at CALU's page for their newsletter: It's neat how they've included in big letters: "Want to read the newsletter in a new window?" That's good.

  8. Hi Sherry - Cal U has done it by putting the iframe code in an Embedded Media & Widgets box instead of a Documents & Files box. They then put the link to the original PDF in the Add/Edit Text section at the top. - Ken

  10. Hi, Pauline,

    It looks like the URL you used for the PDF was wrong. It was pointing to something on your computer, instead of the URL of the file you uploaded.

  11. When I tried to upload a pdf, it seems do be downloading to the user's computer rather than appearing within the box. Help please?!
