In order to add cover art, you need to have either:

  • the book's ISBN, or
  • the URL for the cover art.

Using the Book's ISBN

More often than not, you'll use the ISBN of the book to add cover art. LibGuides offers 2 services for adding the cover art: Syndetics and Amazon. Between these two services, you should be able to add cover art for most books.

  • The Syndetics cover art service is available for use only within LibGuides and LibGuides CMS, whether you subscribe to Syndetics or not.

  • If you use the Amazon service, the cover art will be linked to Amazon, not your catalog. Amazon's terms of use require it, so we cannot change it.
  1. In the Books from the Catalog box, click Add New Book and add the ISBN to the ISBN box. (13 digit ISBNs will only work with Syndetics; they will not work with Amazon - a limitation of their API.)
If you already have a book listed & you just need to add the cover art, click the Edit or Delete Book icon (Screen shot of edit icon.).
  2. Click Get Book Info.
  3. The title, author, publication date, description (if you have CampusGuides), and cover art fields will be filled out automatically with any available information. Syndetics is chosen by default, but you're welcome to switch to Amazon's cover art or a different service, using the "Other" option and entering the URL for the cover art.
  4. Choose what size you'd like the icon to be: small, medium, or large.
  5. Add any other information you want.
  6. Click Save Book Info.

Using a URL

If you happen to have a cover art service other than Syndetics, you can simply add the URL to the book's cover art by choosing the "Other" option.

  2. Hi Grace,

If you select "Other" for the image source in a BfrtC box, you can link to the image on Amazon fr or de. Right lick on the image and copy the image location and paste it into the "Other" field. You will have to fill in the Title, Author and other bibliographic data manually.

  3. I am trying right now to get cover art by using the Other option in this box, and then the image first shows up, but it doesn't "stick". After I save and the pop up window closes, the image isn't there anymore.

The items in question are DVDs, not books, so I can't use ISBN.

  4. Hi Ingela - It is possible to get cover images for DVDs from Syndetics. We have an FAQ about that at Of course, they do not have every DVD, so the Other option may be the one you need. With the Other option, you need to paste in the URL of the image you want to use. Can you send us the URL that you are pasting in, and we can try to see why it is not working? Thanks. - Ken
