Guide FAQ - Your LibGuides v1 Questions. Answered!

How do I copy a guide from another LibGuides site? What about just a box or a page?

I saw a great guide in another library's LibGuides system. I asked them permission & they said I could use it...I'm just not sure how to get it into my LibGuides site!

How do I copy a single box or a page from someone else's guide?

At this time, you cannot copy a single box or a page from the guide; you need to copy the entire guide, and then delete the content you don't want. For information on how to copy the entire guide, read on!

How do I copy an entire guide?

To copy a guide from someone else's LibGuides site:

  1. Login and select Create New Guide from your Dashboard.
  2. On the Create New Guide screen, select the 2nd option: Use an existing guide as a template.
    1. Choose Community.
    2. Enter the URL of the guide that you want to copy in the search box and click Search.
    3. Note: Ask permission first if you are going to copy a guide created by another user.
    4. Click on the guide title in the search results pop-ip to select it.
  3. Enter the new guide title and description.
  4. Click the Create New Guide button to copy the guide to your new site.

After the guide has been copied, you will automatically be taken to your new guide, where you will find all of the same pages and content boxes that were in the original guide. (Please see notes below.)

  • Since this process creates a copy of the original guide, any changes made to the original will not be reflected in the copied guide, and vice-versa.
  • If any boxes or links are "linked" (meaning the creator of the guide added a linked box to the page or reused a link in their system), the best and safest thing for you to do is recreate those boxes (so you can edit them) and then remove the "linked" box from the guide.
  • If you are using this process to "move" a guide from your demo account to your live account, please remember to return to the demo system and delete the original guide if it is no longer needed.
  • After the guide has been copied, you can reassign the guide to another user (if needed) by going to the GUIDES > ALL GUIDE INDEX screen, and using the Change Guide Owner function.

  1. I have one question that I'm still not sure about. When I copy the guide, I don't want to keep the other Library's header etc. How do I copy the guide information but put it in our library template? Does this make sense?

by Jean Reese on Apr 16, 2013.
  2. Hi Jean - When you use another guide as a template, it will bring in all of the content (which you can then edit) but will use your site's banner, colors, etc. - Ken

  3. If I want to use a guide for a school research paper how could I get the guide with MLA citation format?
by Julieta on Nov 18, 2013.
  4. Hi Julieta - In general, LibGuides are cited like other Web sources, with the author (if available), title, institution, etc. You should check with the librarians at your school for specific help with how to cite a guide in MLA format. - Ken

  5. Is this answer still true? We can't copy a box from an external guide (i.e. one that belongs to another university) except by copying the whole guide first?
by Hadas Livnat on Jan 18, 2015.
  6. Hi, Hadas,

This is still the case. The only way to copy a box from another guide remains to copy the entire guide.

  7. Hi! How come when I put the url for the guide that I want to copy into the box, it says there are no guides? It is has a creative commons license but I can't seem to get it to copy as a template?
by mindy on Mar 06, 2015.
  8. Hi, Mindy! It's possible you're trying to copy from a LibGuides 1 to LibGuides 2 site, or vice versa. Guides can only be copied from the same version to the same version of LibGuides.

  9. Are the National Geographic Virtual Library Guides not available to copy anymore? They are on the Best Of list.
by Ben Woody on Aug 05, 2015.
  10. Hi Ben!

The guide is still available, but can only be copied into a LibGuides v1 system. If you're trying to copy those into your beta v2 system, then I'm afraid it won't work. Guides are structured differently between versions, so v1 guides cannot be copied into v2 systems.

Please let us know if you have any other questions!
