Answer

Absolutely!

Use a Guide as your system homepage so you can take advantage of tabs for navigation and all box types without having to find box IDs.

Note:

You won't be able to take advantage of some of the custom boxes on the default system homepage, though. There are some you can replicate pretty accurately using the Links to Guides box or the API Utility, but certain boxes cannot be replicated. (Email alerts, custom info/alert box, featured profiles, etc.)

How?

  • Create your guide > Give it a Friendly URL (Home, Index) > Publish It
  • Admin Account Holders > go to Admin Stuff > Look & Feel > Homepage Tab

homepage tab

  • Scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen until you see the Custom Homepage Redirect option, and then paste/type in the URL to your customized guide. From then on, anyone navigating to your LibGuides home page will be brought to your custom homepage guide.

One important note

Please be sure that your guide is published *before* you make this change, or else you could trigger a rip in the space-time continuum!

Well, that is a bit of an exaggeration, but pointing your homepage to an unpublished guide could result in a redirect loop that prevents the homepage from ever loading properly.

An extra hint...

Many sites prefer to assign their custom guide a friendly URL such as "home", "welcome", or "start", and then they use that friendly URL in the "Custom Homepage Redirect" box. That way when visitors access your site, they will see a nice clean homepage URL like http://help.springshare.com/home rather than the less-friendly http://help.springshare.com/content.php?pid=xxx.
