Q

Is it possible to add links to webclip icons in LibGuides?

I would like our iPhone and iPad users that add a bookmark to their home screen for our LibGuides page to be presented with a custom icon for our library's LibGuides.

Answer

You sure can! Here's how to do it:

First, we'll need to build the link reference, which we'll then add to your site. We'll use the format:

<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="http://image.url"/>

and replace http://image.url with the url for the image you want to use.

  • Upload the icon you want to use to an image sharing site. In this example, I'll use the Image Manager in LibGuides.
  • The ideal image size seems to be 57px x 57px.
    • If you use a larger image, it will be scaled down & should work OK
    • If you use a smaller image, it will become grainy
  • Copy the resulting image URL. Here's my example URL:  http://lgimages.s3.amazonaws.com/data/imagemanager/32714/brain_48.png
  • Paste that URL into the format we mentioned above. My final reference looks like:
    <link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="http://lgimages.s3.amazonaws.com/data/imagemanager/32714/brain_48.png"/>

Next, we'll add this reference to your site

  • Head to the Dashboard
  • Select Admin Stuff -> Look & Feel
  • Scroll to the box called Custom JS/CSS Code
  • Paste in the link reference just as it appears (NOT within style tags!)
  • Click Save Custom HEAD
You'll also want to do this for users who link to the mobile version of your site:
  • Head to the Dashboard
  • Select Admin Stuff -> Mobile Settings
  • If you don't have the Mobile Site Builder:
    • Click the Customize tab
    • Scroll to the box called Custom JS/CSS Code
    • Paste in the link reference just as it appears (NOT within style tags!)
    • Click Save Custom HEAD
  • If you have the Mobile Site Builder:
    • Click on the title for your LibGuides/CampusGuides site (top box)
    • Click the Customize tab
    • Scroll to the box called Custom JS/CSS Code
    • Paste in the link reference just as it appears (NOT within style tags!)
    • Click Save Custom HEAD
Now, when users bookmark your site on their iPhones and iPads, they'll see the image you've designated on their device!

  1. This is great! I did have a question, if someone has already added a bookmark to the homescreen of their device will it change automatically the next time they access libguides, or do they need to re-book mark the site?

  2. Hi, Matt,

It won't update automatically for them. The user will have to update the bookmark if the site address changes.

  3. Will this technique allow me to add a specific icon for campus guide pages? I am thinking of creating individual icons for group pages.

  4. Hi Matt!
Excellent question and idea! I think this one is worth approaching as a "try and see what happens". What I think is that you need to make sure of 3 things:

    1. Ensure to use the code properly
    2. Put it in the group's Custom JS/CSS code field
    3. Make sure to uncheck the three boxes (or at least the first box) in the group's Look & Feel tab.
